The Leo Constellation : things to know.
of reading - words
All the ancient astronomers have said, that this Lion (Leo) ♌️whose constellation was made was the famous animal in the story of Heracles/Hercules, under the name of Lion of Nemea, whose defeat was the result of the first work of the hero. So he retained the name of Nemean or Lion of Nemea. It is said that Heracles alone, and without weapons, struck him down and strangled him, and that he wore the skin for the rest of his life, in memory of this glorious action (Eratosthenes, Manilius).
Mythology and history of the Lion Constellation.
It seems that Aratus and Hipparchus describe the Reclining Lion, as it is in the monuments of Mithra. It looks down upon the setting sun ; it is placed on the head of the Hydra, and it extends to the middle of this constellation. Above it is the Hair of Berenice, or that of the daughters, who perished at Lesbos (Germanicus).

Pisander, Author of the Heracleides, and several other authors, had written about
this celestial animal, according to Hyginus and Eratosthenes. It was said, that he
to have been placed in the heavens as a monument to the memory of the first work (Germanicus).
Nigidius claimed that he had been fed in the sphere of the Moon 🌔, by order of Hera/Junon, and that from there he fell to earth, in Arcadia, where he withdrew to a cave near Nemea, in order to surprise and destroy Heracles. But this hero, armed with the club of Molochus, his host, attacked and defeated him. From that moment on, the club became his weapon, and the skin of the defeated Lion served as his shield for the rest of his life. This first stroke of courage made Heracles dear to mortals, and on the contrary, more odious to Hera. The vanquished animal was placed in the heavens, where it forms a vast and remarkable constellation. Many want it to be because of him that the gymnastic fights known as the Nemean Games were instituted.
Some believe that he was consecrated to the heavens as the chief and king of the animals, and that he was placed there by Zeus/Jupiter, who has his seat in the sign of the Lion, in the distribution that was made of the twelve great gods, between the signs (Manilius). This sign is the home of the Sun, and it is assigned to the element of fire. Plutarch calls Leo the solar animal. Theon says that he was consecrated to the Sun.

Columelle places, at the seventeenth of the calendars of February, the beginning of the Lion's bed, accompanied by the breath of the African wind and austerity, with rainfall indication. The calendar of splendours (Ovid) marks, on the eighth of the February calendars, the setting of the heart of the Lion, the day after that of the Lyra.
Columelle sets it on the sixth, and he attaches the indication of mid-winter to it. On the tenth of the calendars of March, he places the total setting of the Lion, accompanied by the breath of the north winds, known as ornithies, which last thirty days. Then comes the swallow.
The same Columella fixes, on the thirtieth of the calendars of August, the passage of the Sun to the Lion, accompanied by the breath of the wind favonius; on the ninth of these same calendars, the rising of Regulus, with an indication of storm ; on the same calendars, the summer winds. On the eve of the nuns of August, it marks the rising of the middle of Leo, with the indication of a storm.

Heraclide of Pont names it an igneous animal or all of fire, which is a symbol of the ether fire; it redoubles the ardour of summer, by joining its fires to those of the heatwave (Theon). Therefore Horace calls him the furious Lion, Vesanus, the one who, with Procyon, comes to burn the earth with his fires ♌️. The Nile overflowed into Egypt; the end of the pipes of the canals and the keys of the temples therefore bore the effigy of this animal. (Ch. Dupuis).
